Preston County
Preston County Knights

Opening week came replete with upsets, barnburners and last-minute goal line stands.

In one fell swoop we saw RCB exact revenge from a year ago against a talented Fairmont Senior squad.

We saw coach Curtis Bodkins' Philip Barbour Colts withstand a last-second scoring threat by Grafton to pull off a Big 10 win for the ages that reverberated throughout the county.

We even saw the implausible become reality as an incredibly talented H.D. Woodson squad journeyed from the nation's capitol to snap the Morgantown Mohigans amazing 28-game winning streak.

The most difficult task thrust upon us at THEGAMEBREAKER.NET was not in covering these memorable games - that was the easy part.

The tough part came in deciding which team's effort would be crowned as the most profound, the most intense, and quite simply the most impressive.

In a week chock-full of big plays and even bigger surprises many quads stood tall, but perhaps none taller than the Preston County Knights.

Preston County head coach Ralph Wilson, who assumed the reigns of the program midway through the 2005 slate, spent an entire off season preaching a team concept not only to the growing ranks of the Knights' football squad but to whomever would listen. In the weeks leading up to the season, media calls to coach Wilson were never met with the mention of individual players' names, but instead with the coach's assurance that this year's PCHS squad would be about solidarity. For months those outside the program wondered what the coach had up his sleeve. After the upstart Knights knocked off a talented Buckhannon-Upshur squad by a 41-28 count on Friday night, no one is wondering any longer. Last August the Knights' season began with a 36-7 loss to the Bucs. Friday night, things turned out much differently for the black and silver. Led by a determined group of seniors, and inspired by a stadium full of fans eager to return a winner to Kingwood, the Knights overcame an early deficit to race to a 41-14 lead and held on for their first season-opening victory in years. Congratulations to the Knights of Preston County High School, THEGAMEBREAKER.NET'S first "Team of the Week" for the 2006 season.
