Anthony Spencer
Robert C. Byrd
Anthony Spencer, Robert C. Byrd

With only five game’s of action for Robert C. Byrd under his belt, Anthony Spencer has built a very well rounded gridiron resume. In his first appearance for RCB after transferring from Vista del Lago High School, the “California Express” demonstrated an uncanny ability to make the most of limited opportunities by steamrolling the Elkins Tigers with 4 touchdowns despite only touching the ball on offense 6 times. Earlier this month, in his third game with the Eagles (a 38-0 win over Nicholas County) Spencer showed how explosive he truly is when he dusted the entire Grizzlies’ defense for an 80-yard touchdown on a basic sweep play en route to a 171-yard night. This past Friday in an impressive 35-10 win over Parkersburg South, Spencer answered perhaps the only question left to be asked. Yes, he’s explosive and he certainly has a penchant for the big play…But is he durable? The answer against the Patriots was a resounding “yes.” Spencer carried the ball 25 times against a physical Park South defense and along the way tallied a pair of scores and churned out 221 of the Eagles’ 262 total rushing yards.

At 7-1 and with remaining games against Class AA Lincoln and winless Lewis County, Eagle fans have to like their squads’ chances of becoming a major factor in the Class AAA playoff picture. A year ago RCB was forced to sit home at 5-5 and watch the postseason unfold from the outside looking in. A year ago, however, the Flying Eagles weren’t riding the California Express.

For his outstanding performance in Robert C. Byrd’s convincing victory over Parkersburg South, Anthony Spencer is THEGAMEBREAKER.NET’s Player of the Week for week nine, marking the second time in three week’s Spencer has earned the honor.
