Week Nine's Most Sizzling Performances...

- Fairmont Senior

Jerry Kelly, Fairmont Senior
At East-West Stadium Thursday night, Wheeling Park found out what the teams of Class AAA have fearfully wondered all season long…Would a healthy Jerry Kelly transform an already potent Fairmont Senior offense into an almost unstoppable force? Against the Patriots, the answer certainly seemed to be in the affirmative as the junior standout rushed for a season high 190 yards – 164 of which came in the first half as Kelly helped the Polar Bears race to 28 points before the intermission en route to a 34-21 win. Kelly scored on runs of 31 and 47 yards and hauled in a 4 catches to round out his performance. The effort came on the heels of Kelly’s 136-yard outing against Elkins two weeks ago. A pattern of productivity has suddenly begun to emerge for the FSHS tailback, and that’s a bad omen for Polar Bear opponents.

- East Fairmont

Carter DeVault, East Fairmont
The versatile play of junior signal caller Carter DeVault continued to set the tone for a dynamic East Fairmont offense as the Bees rolled to a 27-7 win over NCAC foe Buckhannon-Upshur. DeVault connected on 8-of-14 passes for 127 yards a pair of scores, while rushing for a touchdown and racking up a game-high 139 yards rushing. The effort gives the talented playmaker 24 touchdowns (20 pass; 4 rush) and more than 1,900 yards of total offense on the season (1,228 passing; 693 rushing) and helps DeVault on his quest to become the first East side QB in thirty years to guide the Bees to the state playoffs.

- Elkins

Tyler Jackson, Elkins
Jackson led a furious Tigers’ offensive charge that racked up 50 points in a runaway victory over Lewis County. So dominant was the EHS attack that 36 of their points incredibly came in the first half alone. Jackson, one of several talented juniors who have the Elkins faithful eagerly anticipating the prospects of a bright 2007 season, carried 14 times for a game-high 138 yards and three touchdowns, posting an eye-popping 9.9 yard average per attempt. The win moved the Tigers to 3-5 on the season and helped avenge a 33-9 defeat EHS suffered at the hands of the Minutemen a year ago in Weston.

- University

Adrian Smith, University
Heading into University’s match-up with NCAC opponent Preston County this past Friday, Hawks’ tailback Adrian Smith led the region in rushing on the year by a margin of nearly 300 yards. In guiding UHS to a 41-0 win over the Knights, Smith put forth an effort that not only proved far too much for PCHS to handle but that also most likely secured an area rushing title for the blazing fast University senior. Against Preston, Smith was once again an open field terror, turning 22 carries into 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the season, the UHS dynamo has churned out nearly 150 yards per game on the ground while rushing for 9 touchdowns.

- Fairmont Senior

Kyle Allard, Fairmont Senior
Allard continued his campaign for the 2006 Kennedy Award with another stellar outing against Wheeling Park Thursday night at East-West Stadium. The Polar Bear QB threw for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one of which came when the heady senior called the number of West side’s 6’5” wideout Ben Kettering to exploit a mismatch against the Patriots’ 5’7” cornerback Ronnell Green. The play resulted in a leaping 21-yard scoring grab by Kettering that gave FSHS a 28-21 lead at the break. When the rain began falling after the half and both squads became more reliant on their rushing attacks, it was still Allard that Fairmont Senior leaned on when the chips were down as the explosive field general hit paydirt on a 54-yard run that proved to be the only points scored in the second half. For the game, Allard totaled 147 yards on the ground to vault his season long rushing total over 500 yards.
