Week Eight's Most Sizzling Performances...

- Morgantown

Derek Long, Morgantown
The most explosive weapon on the area’s most feared team was at it again Friday night at Pony Lewis Field, turning the Mohigans’ homecoming match-up with the Parkersburg South Patriots into his own personal offensive workshop. Derek Long hit paydirt four times, including three first half scores that put MHS up 19-0 at the intermission. On the night Long turned 15 carries into more than 180 yards on the ground and added a 30 yard scoring grab from QB Charlie Russell shortly before the half. The performance gave the Morgantown senior wingback over 1,000 yards from scrimmage on the year to compliment his 14 touchdowns.

- Clay-Battelle

Josh Ammons, Clay-Battelle
Just how good - and how deep - are the undefeated Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees? In a game that saw them exact revenge against the Cameron Dragons Friday night - the team that knocked CBHS from the ranks of the unbeaten last year – coach Ryan Wilson’s squad racked up over 400 yards of total offense, more than half of which was accounted for by the Cee-Bees’ third leading rusher: Senior Josh Ammons. Against the Dragons, the talented Ammons carried the load for Clay-Battelle, churning out a career high 217 yards on 32 carries to guide CBHS to a convincing 41-6 win. In short, this proved to be yet another dominant Cee-Bees rushing performance brought to you by Colby Watson, Chris Tennant and one of the most formidable offensive lines in all of Class A.

- South Harrison

Kevin Fury, South Harrison
With four straight losses heading into their showdown with Class AA county rival Lincoln, some area high school football pundits had pegged the South Harrison Hawks as a beaten team that would never recover. Apparently those experts hadn’t counted on the gritty resolve of coach Brad Jett’s proud program, nor had they accounted for the iron-clad refusal of SHHS running back Kevin Fury to abandon hope for his senior season. In a tough environment on the road against a talented Cougars squad, Fury provided the Hawks with the offensive stability they needed to pull the upset. The South Harrison standout carried 26 times for 162 yards and scored three touchdowns to pace a classic 26-19 win.

- Fairmont Senior

Ben Kettering, Fairmont Senior
After seven games the Polar Bears are off to one of their hottest starts in years. A major factor behind West side’s 5-2 record has been the play of wide receiver Ben Kettering who has established himself as one of the area’s most reliable targets. A lanky 6’5” frame combined with tremendous ball skills and a penchant for the big catch have made Kettering the prototype receiver and have helped FSHS quarterback Kyle Allard achieve records heights. On the year Kettering has hauled in 40 passes for nearly 500 yards and 8 touchdowns, including an 11-catch performance last Friday against Elkins in which the Polar Bear senior racked up 151 yards to help guide FSHS to a 35-14 win.

Honorable Mention -

Mark Gray, Bridgeport; Jordan Simon, Philip Barbour; Cody Gilmore, Robert C. Byrd; Jordan Griffin, Robert C. Byrd; Jerry Kelly, Fairmont Senior; Zach Boone, East Fairmont

- Liberty

Travis Losh, Liberty
Losh has slowly but certainly developed into one of Liberty’s most pleasant surprises. After assuming the reigns for former LHS standout Marcus Broadwater, Losh has thrown for over 900 yards and guided the Mountaineers to a 6-1 start in the face of one of the area’s toughest schedules. Say what you like about the Liberty Mountaineers but after winning three consecutive games by a total of five points behind last minute heroics, they are certainly fun to watch. In a pivotal match-up last week against Class AAA Nicholas County Losh was at it again, connecting on 8-of-14 attempts for 219 yards and throwing both Mountaineer touchdowns in a thrilling 14-12 win.
