Week Seven's Most Sizzling Performances...

- Bridgeport

Mark Gray, Bridgeport
If a lengthy bus ride of more than three hours couldn’t slow him down, how could Musselman High hope to stop him? After a long journey to the Eastern panhandle for a match-up against the struggling Applemen, Bridgeport’s Mark Gray led the way for an Indians’ ground game that churned out an incredible 502 yards en route to a convincing 28-7 victory. The BHS senior turned 19 carries into a game-high 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the unbeaten Tribe. On the year, Gray has racked up 645 rushing yards to help the bruising Bridgeport offense average 34 points and 290 yards per game on the ground.

- East Fairmont

Derek Sevier, East Fairmont
Already leading the region in TD receptions heading into East side’s game against Lewis County, the rangy Sevier was at it again Friday night in Weston. The senior receiver hauled in 4 touchdowns on 4 receptions for a total of 96 yards – all in the first half – to help lift EFHS to a 47-13 win. “Sleepy” Sevier’s performance included an incredible grab on a 4th-and-33 play that saw the Bees’ wideout leap over three LCHS defenders to make the catch in the endzone. “All he does is catch touchdowns” used to be the catch phrase (no pun intended) often called upon to sum up the style of play of former Minnesota Vikings’ wide receiver Cris Carter. Sevier’s record-setting level of production has indeed inpsired a similar description as 14 of his 23 catches on the season have now gone for scores.

- Fairmont Senior

Kyle Allard, Fairmont Senior
Dynamic? Explosive? Incredible? After nearly two seasons of chronicling the amazing antics of Fairmont Senior QB Kyle Allard, our adjective reservoir has just about run dry. Please lend us a hand and/or a little of your own creative imagery in describing Allard’s performance Friday night in the Polar Bear’s 28-14 win over Buckhannon-Upshur. Against the Bucs, the (insert adjective here) Allard put forth another (adjective) outing. The FSHS signal caller demonstrated (adjective) precision, connecting on 74 percent of his tosses for an (adjective) 217 yards and three touchdown strikes. The (adjective) performance marked Allard’s fourth 200-yard passing effort on the year and brought his yardage for the season to an (adjective) 1,269.

- University

Adrian Smith, University
Adrian Smith might only be listed at 5 feet 7 inches, but with University High’s season on the line Friday night he suddenly seemed ten feet tall. With the Hawks’ proverbial backs to the wall against Class AAA No. 10 ranked Brooke at Pony Lewis Field, Smith proved once again that there are simply no substitutes for unmitigated speed and relentless determination. In a watershed victory over the 5-1 Bruins, the UHS senior lifted the Hawks’ offense onto his shoulders and almost literally carried them to victory. Smith toted the football a career high 30 times for 158 yards on the night and hit paydirt on a 15-yard catch in the 4th quarter to seal the win. The performance keeps the Hawks’ postseason aspirations alive and makes Smith the first area player to cross the 1,000 yard rushing threshold on the year.

- East Fairmont

Carter DeVault, East Fairmont
After assuming the reigns for former EFHS standout Adam Leonard, East Fairmont quarterback Carter DeVault didn’t take long to make a name for himself. In his first game as East side’s starter the junior signal caller led the Bees to a 38-point performance in an impressive season opening win. Since that time, he’s never looked back. Friday night at Lewis County, DeVault directed an EFHS attack that dominated the first 24 minutes of play so thoroughly in building a 33-0 lead that the Bees ran only two plays on their side of the 50-yard line in the entire first half…and both of those plays put them into LCHS territory. On the night, DeVault fired four TD strikes – all in the first half – and racked up 157 yards in the air while adding another 31 on the ground.

Honorable Mention

Cody Pifer, Tucker County; Joey Farris, Lincoln; Kevin Fury, South Harrison; Evan Haught, North Marion; R.J. Beach, Clay-Battelle; Troy Wilsoncroft, Doddridge County
