Week Eleven's Most Sizzling Performances...

- Clay-Battelle

Levi Sanders, Clay-Battelle
Despite trailing at the half 28-22 due to a pair of Bishop Donahue defensive touchdowns, Clay-Battelle never wavered from a basic but effective game plan that called for a steady diet of Sanders right and Sanders left. The CBHS senior paced a ground game that racked up an amazing 482 yards and helped coach Ryan Wilson’s squad score 21 unanswered points in the second half for a 43-28 win. All night long Sanders played the role he’s best suited for in the Cee-Bees’ offense: Work horse. The senior toted the ball 26 times for 251 yards which included a 1-yard scoring plunge in the second quarter. The victory in McMechen was a pivotal one as it helped Clay-Battelle lock down the school’s first home playoff game in 22 years.

- Grafton

Damon Waters, Grafton
The third head of Grafton’s three-headed rushing monster wreaked havoc on winless Braxton County in a decisive win that guarantees a first round home game for the Bearcats in the 2006 playoffs. Sophomore standout Damon Waters, No. 3 on the squad in rushing yardage behind Jarod Shaw and Corey Westerman, enjoyed a career performance against the Eagles as he churned out 109 yards on only 11 carries for an eye-popping 9.9 yard average per attempt. Waters performance was punctuated by 4 touchdown runs and his effort brings the young GHS ground gainer’s season touchdown total to 9, good enough for tops on the entire Bearcats team.

- Robert C. Byrd

Anthony Spencer, Robert C. Byrd
It’s become as elementary as 1 + 1 = 2. If you happened to be glancing through the local high school scoreboard Friday night and noticed that Robert C. Byrd put up 63 points against Lewis County, you probably assumed that RCB senior dynamo Anthony Spencer posted some pretty impressive numbers. That assumption was correct. Spencer has quickly become the driving force behind an incredibly deep and talented Flying Eagles offense, and against the Minutemen he held true to form. Spencer made the most of his 12 carries as he erupted for 190 yards and a pair of scores, including a 57-yard back breaker in the second quarter.

- Notre Dame

Preston Musgrave, Notre Dame
In a critical 21-12 win over Doddridge County that lifted Notre Dame into the postseason, Irish quarterback Preston Musgrave continued to prove that he is one of the area’s most versatile playmakers. In addition to throwing for 120 yards and tossing his 19th touchdown pass of the season, the junior standout racked up another 37 yards and 2 scores on the ground while also hauling in his second TD grab of the year, a 32 yard throwback from receiver John Martino on a gadget play. For the regular season, Musgrave amassed nearly 1900 yards of total offense in guiding the Irish to a 6-4 record and playoff appearance.

- Robert C. Byrd

Cody Gilmore, Robert C. Byrd
One thing is certain following Cody Gilmore’s performance Friday night in Robert C. Bryd’s 63-0 win over Lewis County…He sure does throw a catchable ball. The junior standout was deadly accurate as he connected on 9-of-10 pass attempts (90%) for 180 yards and 4 touchdowns – three of which went to fellow junior Jordan Griffin, one of the state’s top perimeter players. The outing catapulted Gilmore’s passing yardage for the year to over 1,400 while taking his touchdown pass total to 19 against nine interceptions. By the way, in case you’re wondering what happened on the only pass Gilmore DIDN’T complete against the Minutemen Friday night…It was intercepted. That’s right, ten throws and none of them hit the ground. We told you he throws a catchable ball.
