Week One's Most Sizzling Performances...

Zach Losh - Robert C. Byrd

A week ago Harrison County high school football fans had never heard the name Zach Losh. Now, after RCB’s upset win over Fairmont Senior Friday night, Losh is suddenly being haled as the area’s newest and most dynamic sophomore sensation. That’s what a 153-yard, two touchdown performance against a talented rival in your first varsity start will do for you. With standout quarterback J.J. Mayer gone to graduation, Eagles’ head coach Bryan Fisher has literally brought his offensive approach back down to earth as RCB ran the ball on 44 of 60 offensive plays. That certainly bodes well for Byrd’s shifty new feature back Losh.

Nick Stewart - Philip Barbour

There can’t be many things more exciting for a quarterback than playing for an aggressive head coach who once was a signal caller himself. Just ask Philip Barbour’s Nick Stewart. Under the tutelage of PBHS head coach Curtis Bodkins, a standout quarterback for the Colts in the early 90s, Stewart put on an aerial show Friday night against conference rival Grafton that fans are already calling a classic. The senior connected on 23-of-32 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns against only one interception in guiding the upstart Colts to a thrilling 17-12 win.

Kevin Fury - South Harrison

Some might say the West Milford football gods “unleashed their Fury” Friday night. In the hard-nosed fashion that the black and orange faithful have come to expect from their hometown Hawks, running back Kevin Fury paced a South Harrison ground game last week that amassed nearly 300 yards. In short, Fury ran like a man full of just that. On only 16 carries the South Harrison senior racked up 137 yards and struck paydirt three times in a convincing 34-12 win over Doddridge County.

Andrew Carrier - Buckhannon-Upshur

In a hard fought loss at Preston Friday night, Carrier hauled in 9 receptions for 117 yards and recorded a hat trick with three touchdown grabs in a losing effort against Preston County Friday night, one of which was a second quarter gem in which he deflected an errant pass into the air before snatching it up and dashing 61 yards to the endzone. Though the Bucs comeback bid fell short in the second half, two of Carrier's scores came when the blue and white needed them the most - in the final quarter with the Bucs trying to rally from a large deficit.

Josh Layton - Preston

Not since Ken Burns award-winning Civil War documentary have we seen more north and south maneuvering than what Preston County's Josh Layton provided Friday night. There was no shake-and-bake in Layton's running style against Buckhannon-Upshur, just sheer will and brute force. Like a runaway freight train Layton tore through the Bucs defense for 122 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Knights to a momentous victory. Layton's punishing performance indeed placed new emphasis on the term "north-south runner".

Honorable Mention

Luke Hyre, Buckhannon-Upshur; Carter Devault, East Fairmont; Paul Bulka, Philip Barbour; Rocky Shaffer, Lewis County; Aaron Echard, Bridgeport
